I joined the Holospira in Singapore in June 1969 as first trip Chief Officer. This was also my 'honeymoon' trip as Brenda joined with me, for what was to be an 8 month trip. It is interesting to record that I was one of 9 first trip Mates all on one of the famous KLM 'combi-flights'. (Does anyone else remember those?) Only 5 of us completed our tours of duty successfully enough to remain in that rank permanently.
We have Shell to thank for a wonderful beginning to our married life, as we had to wait in the old Cockpit Hotel for 9 days until the Holospira finally arrived in S'pore. We joined the vessel in Bukom, where Ian Walker (Ch Officer) was busy tank cleaning for Drydock. We then had 6 weeks in Jurong drydock, with shore accommodation in the 'Station Hotel'. As Ch/fficer, I had my own car and driver (Dan Ho). Interestingly, I was to meet the driver's son Peter Ho in the 90's. He drove us from the airport to our hotel in his Mercedes limo.
Our trips on the Holospira took us to Japan, Australia, Sambu and Pladju (with associated groundings on the sand banks in the famous Musi River). Great days.
We now live in New Zealand. Capt. J P Briand 03/Nov/09
