Was Engineer on duty 30th November 1994 while attending the sinking passanger ship MS Achille Lauro off Somalia. Have some great pics from SS Lima as we took onboard the Honduran crew.

02/14/2012 - 14:30 Roy Halsall

Spent 5 months to the day onboard Lima, never stepping off her between joining -somewhere in the Persian gulf, and also Paying off in the Persian Gulf.
One of the worst -NO the WORST trip of my 10 year seagoing career.
I was 5th engineer , treated like a first tripper, having "gone over to the other side" from being a Pumpman - Shell decided in their infinite wisdom to Flag out -and do away with our EXCELLENT UK Ratings, so I decided to try my hand at being an engineer. Big, Big mistake What a bunch of arseholes I had the misfortune to sail with (Cook / Steward excepted)It was awful. Logs , Logs and yet more Logs! We were all day work, so they only carried one fiver. Always remember the chief -Little Glaswegian (Davey Swain) calling me up to his office about a week before I was due to pay off, and him asking me if I wanted to sign a contract with Joe Shell! - I knew their game, if I had agreed to sign, then I wouldnt have been able to get off! ( Bear in mind I was a week away from 5 months onboard a supertanker!!!)I told him in no uncertain terms what I thought of both the ship and my trip, which was not very complimentry!!! I also said that I didnt give a flying F**k if there was a relief for me or not, I was going home once we got to the sraights.
Needless to say the Chief wasnt very impressed, but heh he hadnt spent 5 solid months in a stinking engine room with temperatures of around 100 degrees each and every day!
The engineers and mates showed me the worst of the British Merchant Navy - they were all busy stuck up their own orifices! How I missed the camaraderie and TRUE seaman spirit of the Great British ( None finer) Ratings!!!!
