Paternal Gr'father James Campbell MN served on her Dec. 1939 - Jun. 1940 to Abadan in the Gulf & back. They were bombed somewehre but I can't find out where. He described being in port & the captain's shoe-heels disappearing between the guardrails as he dove into the harbour & Jim thought "if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me." Seems odd to me, as shockwave from bombs bursting would be worse underwater, & aboard a tanker you can fight a fire, in the water with leaking oil burning on it, you're helpless. Such are the memories of the old. |

My Dad served on the San Adolfo as a Junior Engineer, which was his first ship when he joined Eagle Oil in 1948, where he stayed until 1953, when he joined Tyne Tees Navigation as Chief Engineer. He was serving on the San Adolfo when he met my mother in Rotterdam in 1950 - they married in Rotterdam in St Margaret's Church in 1953, after which they moved to South Shields. If it wasn't for Eagle Oil, I wouldn't have been born! Mt Dad also served on the San Vito and the San Cipriano. My Dad remembers Norman Willis for South Shields and Mr Taylor from Sunderland. My Mother died 21st May 2010. |
