08/29/2016 - 11:14	Mike Jackson	Ships peggy/mess boy in 1968. Unluckiest ship I sailed on. Had an officer die when deckhand was cutting his hair. Someone got bitten by a dog ashore so had to have rabies jabs. I had 2 ulcers come up on my wisdom teeth, really painful. Funniest thing I ever saw at sea,was the captains tiger getting soaked by waves on the flying bridge, as he ran along it trying to get sandwiches to the bridge. Took 3 goes at it! Not the happiest trip I had so signed off as soon as I could.
07/18/2016 - 14:08	James Harriott	We berthed in Quebec a little after midnight one July night in 1965. I was on watch on the wheel, having not been relieved by the next watch. I wonder what the skipper would have said had he noticed, when the lights went up, that the deck boy had just berthed her.

Although I did not sail on hemactra the name has stayed with me since 1965 when I was 4th engineer on a trident tanker Maloja,on charter to shell.We were passing from pacific to Atlantic and in the Panama canal had to take the cargo off Hemimactra due to extensive bow damage sustained in a collision with I believe was lock gates.She was bound for ancorage and winter was almost upon us.During the transfer operation one of the maloja crew members decided to jump into the canal and the chief officer went in to rescue him but he got into difficulties when the crewman began to struggle so I made the decision to assist in the rescue and in the event all went well so Hemimactra remains in my memory.

Billy Billingsley and Tiny the Messman were my best mates and we had some memorable runs ashore in Curacao and almost every other port we called at.I was only a silly youth and I owe apologies to Chris Self the second mate for missing watches because of my nocturnal activities, it was nothing personal Chris ,I did like you and your wife Sue. I think also at Christmas to the 3rd,s wife Margaret for worrying you when I was a little drunk. The folly of youth
05/17/2014 - 18:18	Bob Gayton	Hi Those photos certainly bring back some memories for me. One of the best ships I ever sailed on. I joined Hemimactra as F/G in Nov. a??67 and paid off in May a??68 with a brief stint in hospital in Recife having been scalded during a fire drill. I we'll remember the storekeeper, a cockney chap called Arthur Hollinsworth, a real card. Brilliant times! We spent six weeks on the coast of Brazil, a different story in each port! The last place we called in at was Rio Grande do Sol, what a night! I staggered back to the ship in the morning and we were swapping stories on the poop deck while having a livener before starting work. I was describing the gorgeous, dark haired beauty I was with the previous night and remembered that she'd given me a photo which I pulled out of my picket. What a shock I got when I looked at it, she was dark- haired all right with no front teeth and tribal scars on her face! Still a great night though!
